Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko held a working meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Dang Minh Khoi to discuss bilateral cooperation in its various aspects, including expanding trade and tourism.
Dmitry Chernyshenko thanked the Ambassador for his efforts to support and accompany efforts aimed at developing Russia-Vietnam relations and expressed his special gratitude for Vietnam’s presence at the BRICS Summit in Kazan.
“The fact that President Vladimir Putin had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Vietnam was very important for us. We are witnessing positive momentum in the way the two countries have been working together in the key sectors. In particular, trade increased by 23 percent in the first nine months of 2024. Tourist flows were also on the rise with an 81.5 percent increase in the number of Russian tourists travelling to Vietnam in January-October, while the tourist flow from Vietnam to Russia in the first six months of the year increased by about 10 percent,” the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out.
He went on to say that the transition to e-visas had been a major factor in terms of attracting more tourists from Vietnam to Russia. As many as 45,000 Vietnamese citizens have already used this solution in January-October 2024.
Offering direct flights between the two countries have also made a meaningful contribution to generating higher tourist flows. Aeroflot and IrAero operate flights from Moscow and Irkutsk to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi five times a week.
According to Vietnamese statistics, in 2023, Russians travelled to Vietnam 125,000 times, which exceeds the 2022 results by a factor of three. In the first ten months of 2024, the passenger flow to Vietnam from Russia was equal to 177,800.
Dmitry Chernyshenko added that several tourism-related events will be held next year to promote Russia as a tourist destination and demonstrate its potential in this sector.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary thanked the Russia-Vietnam Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation for its effective performance and noted its contribution to developing bilateral relations.
“There is no doubt that this made a meaningful contribution to preparing the visits carried out by the two countries’ leaders this year with President Vladimir Putin travelling to Hanoi and Pyohgyang, while Prime Minister of Vietnam Phạm Minh Chính visited Kazan,” Dang Minh Khoi pointed out.
He said that that Vietnam was ready to step up its cooperation with Russia in all its aspects, including energy, expanding tourist flows and developing direct air service. The proposal to open a Russian school has been taken on board too.
In conclusion, Dmitry Chernyshenko said that he was ready to hold regular meetings with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Dang Minh Khoi and senior Vietnamese government officials to discuss any matters pertaining to Russia-Vietnam ties.
The Russian participants at the meeting included State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Energy Anastasia Bondarenko, Deputy Economic Development Minister Vladimir Iliychev, as well as officials from the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Finance.
The Vietnamese participants included First Secretary of the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Russia Thi Thuy Hang, Councillor of the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Russia Duong Hoang Minh, and Councillor of the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Russia Doan Khac Hoang.
