Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Zhang Guoqing opened the 10th Russia-China EXPO in Harbin. It has become an essential trade and industry platform facilitating the expansion and diversification of partnership between the two countries. Yury Trutnev read out Russian President Vladimir Putin’s message of greetings to EXPO participants and organisers while Zhang Guoqing read out a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Following the opening ceremony, Yury Trutnev and Zhang Guoqing toured several stands of the Chinese and Russian exhibitions.
“Russia-China EXPO is an important and useful platform for the promotion of bilateral relations. Russia has a well-balanced exhibit this year featuring Russian-made equipment, including helicopters, as well as technological achievements. We must continue interaction between our countries and exchange technologies because they make it possible for the contemporary world to develop,” Yury Trutnev said.
EXPO is held with support from the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Economic Development. The Chinese organisers include the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the government of the Heilongjiang province.
This year, the Russian-Chinese expo occupies an area of 12,000 square metres. The Russian part hosts 250 organisations on 4,500 square metres, including major Russian corporations like VTB, Rostec State Corporation and Alfa Bank. In addition, 16 regions of Russia are represented there – the Amur, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, Ryazan, Sverdlovsk and Tver regions, the city of Moscow, the Trans-Baikal, Kamchatka, Khabarovsk and Primorye territories as well as the Republics of Buryatia, Komi, Sakha (Yakutia), Tatarstan, and the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area – Yugra. The exhibition also has pavilions featuring China’s provinces, and stands by Russian and Chinese companies. The Sakhalin Region and the Jewish Autonomous Region have brought their products to the Made in Russia festival and fair. The expo’s partner from the Russian side is Moscow, and from the Chinese side, the provinces of Guangdong and Jiangxi.
The Russian part of the exhibition is focused on traditional folk arts and crafts, which are showcased in the collective exhibition, Culture and Customs: The Treasures of Russia, organised by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, as well as at the stands of the Russia National Centre, the Imperial Porcelain Factory, and the Made in Russia trade fair and festival, organised by the Russian Export Centre. Additionally, the Russian Export Centre has curated an exhibition featuring over 100 Russian agricultural producers, cosmetics, consumer goods and jewellery manufacturers, who will present their products. Alongside current export-oriented goods, the stands of Russian regions offer information about Russian education programmes.
Among others, Yury Trutnev toured the pavilions of the Far Eastern regions. The Khabarovsk Territory highlighted key areas of international cooperation. The focus is on a strategic project of federal and international significance – the development of Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island, which includes the creation of a cargo and passenger border crossing point, a branch of the Russia National Centre, the Park of Peoples’ Friendship, and the Russian-Chinese Technopark. The industrial section of the stand showcases the achievements of the Khabarovsk Territory as an industrial hub of the Russian Far East: aircraft known far beyond Russia, such as the Sukhoi Su-57, Sukhoi Su-35, Yakovlev SSJ-100, and the Steregushchiy-class corvette. A dedicated section of the stand features products from SME exporters of the Khabarovsk Territory. Companies from the region are also presenting their products at the Made in Russia trade fair and festival.
“At the Khabarovsk Territory stand, we focused on the presentation of the most significant interstate-level project – the joint development of Bolshoi Ussuriysky Island. For the first time, we are presenting to Chinese visitors the project of the Russia National Centre to be built on the island. The National Centre will become a hub attracting tourists from both our country and the People’s Republic of China – it will combine the Journey Across Russia exhibition, the Tastes of Russia gastronomic streets, the Made in Russia department store, and a congress area for hosting national and interstate-level events,” commented Dmitry Demeshin, Governor of the Khabarovsk Territory.
The Primorye Territory exhibition reflects the region’s unique natural and cultural identity, highlighting its richness and diversity. “The Primorye Territory stand featured products from 23 local companies,” said Governor Oleg Kozhemyako. “Many of them are already working successfully with China and are keen to expand cooperation with the PRC.”
Other Far Eastern regions are also represented at the Expo. Companies from the Trans-Baikal Territory are showcasing their export, tourism and investment potential. “We are focusing on practical results: negotiations, finding partners and distribution channels for small and medium‑sized businesses in the region,” said Governor Alexander Osipov. “I am confident that we will find new common ground, which will give impetus to joint projects in cross‑border trade and tourism.”
The Amur Region is represented by ten companies operating in trade, logistics and tourism, as well as honey producers and manufacturers of unique products based on natural extracts. The stand focuses on the work of the Competence Centre for Russian‑Chinese Business Cooperation, established in Blagoveshchensk at President Vladimir Putin’s direction. “At the Harbin Expo, we are showcasing the Amur Region’s competitive advantages: from cross‑border infrastructure – an international road bridge, a cable car and a dry port – to a gas chemical cluster, advanced soybean processing, and the tourism opportunities of Blagoveshchensk’s Golden Mile,” said Governor Vasily Orlov. “This year, we are also presenting the work of the Russian‑Chinese Business Cooperation Competence Centre. The centre, created in response to the President’s instruction, helps Russian and Chinese businesses connect quickly and work together seamlessly.”
The main goal of the Kamchatka Territory display is to introduce visitors to authentic local products and showcase the region’s unique culinary specialities through organic food made from local ingredients. “Participation of Kamchatka brands in the Russia‑China Expo is an important step for our businesses – finding new partners and entering new markets in the Asia‑Pacific region,” explained Governor Vladimir Solodov.
Buryatia is presenting confectionery and food products from three companies at the Expo. “Taking part in the Expo is a real opportunity for small and medium‑sized businesses to enter the Chinese market, find new partners and boost exports,” noted Alexei Tsydenov, Head of the Republic of Buryatia.
The central theme of the Yakut exhibition, Yakutia’s Railways – The Rails of Friendship, is to demonstrate the strategic role of rail transport in strengthening trade and economic cooperation between Russia and China. “Our exhibition at the Harbin Expo is not just a stand, but a symbol of Yakutia’s strategic pivot to the East,” said Aisen Nikolayev, Head of Yakutia. “We offer much more than logistics. A wide range of projects are being presented – from the construction of LNG plants and an AI data centre to modern hotels and a ski resort.”
Products from the Sakhalin Region and the Jewish Autonomous Region are on display as part of the Made in Russia festival and fair. The Sakhalin Region is presenting jewellery, souvenirs, cosmetics and food products. “The island region is ready to supply China with high‑quality products from the fishing industry, agriculture and other sectors, as well as from creative industries,” said Governor Valery Limarenko.
The Jewish Autonomous Region is represented at a joint stand by the twin cities of Hegang and Birobidzhan. “The government of the Jewish Autonomous Region consistently supports local businesses in entering foreign markets,” noted Governor Maria Kostyuk. “The region’s participation in the Made in Russia international festival and fair is an opportunity to present the region’s potential to a wider audience.”
The Expo’s business programme includes 14 events. The centrepiece of the first day is the 6th Russia‑China Forum on Interregional Cooperation, dedicated to practical cooperation between Russian regions and Chinese provinces.
Alongside the business programme, the Harbin Expo features a rich cultural programme aimed at strengthening humanitarian ties between Russia and China. Moscow Days in Harbin will take place on 19–20 May, with cultural, sporting and business events focused on developing cooperation between the Russian capital and Chinese regions. From 17 to 21 May, the Made in Russia festival and fair of Russian goods will be held. Festival guests will have the opportunity to discover Russian products, culinary traditions and folk arts and crafts, as well as to take part in tastings, workshops and cultural events.
