The 12th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Russian-Algerian Commission took place in Algeria, co-chaired by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev and Algerian Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Youcef Cherfa. The meeting participants focused on bilateral cooperation in energy, industry, agriculture, transport, and pharmaceuticals.
“The Russian-Algerian Intergovernmental Commission has demonstrated its effectiveness as a key platform for dialogue and cooperation across various sectors. Algeria remains one of Russia’s top trading partners in Africa, with bilateral trade reaching $1.7 billion in the first ten months of last year alone. Agricultural products and food form the foundation of our trade relations. In 2024, Russian agricultural exports grew to over $850 million, driven by increased shipments of barley, lentils, soybean oil, and dry milk,” Dmitry Patrushev said.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Russia is also working on expanding the supply of halal products, with the potential for increased exports of Russian animal vaccines as a promising area of cooperation.
“Our countries are global leaders in oil and gas production and possess substantial reserves of solid minerals. There is significant potential to deepen collaboration across various sectors. By combining our expertise and resources, we can produce high-quality goods. I am confident that our joint efforts will further strengthen cooperation and enhance trade and economic ties,” Dmitry Patrushev stated.
Interest in Russian higher education continues to grow among Algerian students. This academic year alone, nearly 2,000 Algerian students are enrolled in Russian universities, with the number of scholarships steadily increasing. The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted this as a positive step towards fostering the exchange of skilled professionals.
Additionally, both countries are strengthening cooperation in culture and sports. Russia is also prepared to implement joint projects in the field of information technology and expand dialogue in mass communications.
Following the meeting of the intergovernmental commission, Russian and Algerian agencies signed several bilateral agreements in education, science, economics, and standardisation.
The Joint Intergovernmental Russian-Algerian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation has been active since 2013. Dmitry Patrushev has chaired the Russian delegation since 5 February 2020, while Youcef Cherfa, Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, has led the Algerian delegation since November 2024. The previous meeting took place in Moscow on 24−26 October 2023.
