Denis Manturov chaired the 13th meeting of the Russian-Indonesian Joint Commission on Trade, Economic and Technological Cooperation
First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Airlangga Hartarto co-chaired the 13th meeting of the Russian-Indonesian Joint Commission on Trade, Economic and Technological Cooperation. The discussion focused on a broad range of issues related to bilateral cooperation in trade, industry, investment, transport, energy, science, education and culture.
Russian-Indonesian trade is developing positively despite global challenges. Over the past five years, bilateral trade increased by over 80 percent, reaching $4.3 billion in 2024, when Indonesia became one of Russia’s top three foreign trade partners in among ASEAN nations.
“However, the potential of our economic interaction is considerably larger, as the Russian-Indonesian Business Forum, which was held in Jakarta yesterday, has shown. Our business communities have a practical interest in promoting mutually beneficial cooperation. Given the success of this format, I propose furthering the practice of combining such business events with the meetings of the Commission. I also believe that it will be prudent to encourage Russian and Indonesian companies to take part in major conferences and exhibitions held in our countries,” Denis Manturov pointed out.
The diversification of mutual trade is facilitated by business dialogue between the two countries. For example, Russia is not only exporting fuel and energy to Indonesia but is also increasing the delivery of foods and mineral fertilisers. It also resumed wheat deliveries in 2023. “We hope to launch the export of halal meat products soon, and there is a possibility to expand the export of timber and metal goods,” the First Deputy Prime Minister emphasised.
The signing of the free trade agreement between Indonesia and the EAEU and an intergovernmental agreement on customs cooperation and mutual assistance will promote the growth of mutual trade and simplify mutual access to each other’s markets. Denis Manturov also stressed the importance of ensuring the reliability of mutual settlements.
Special attention at the meeting was given to the further development of cooperation in digital technology. Russian companies are ready to implement their own information security, AI and smart city solutions in Indonesia. The First Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed Russia’s readiness for dialogue on space projects, including Earth remote sensing, satellite navigation and manned space flight technologies, as well as the training of the relevant personnel.
Russia and Indonesia are strengthening cooperation in culture, education, tourism and sports. When speaking about the strengthening of partner relations between media outlets, Denis Manturov welcomed the plans of the Russia Today television network to jointly produce news items in the Indonesian language for local channels. This will help provide objective information about Russian-Indonesian cooperation and global events in the interests of both nations.
Following the meeting, the sides signed a final protocol and a Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Service for Accreditation (RusAccreditation) and the Indonesian halal quality control agency (Badan Penyelenggara Produk Halal or BPJPH) aimed at improving conditions for halal products’ access to the Indonesian market. The two countries have also signed a cooperation agreement to improve quality and business excellence between RusQuality and the Indonesia Quality and Productivity Association (IQPMA), as well as a sports cooperation agreement between the Russian and Indonesian badminton associations.
