The implementation of the comprehensive project is expected to improve the safety of navigation, develop civilian and naval activity, facilitate the Northern Delivery Operation for constituent entities in Russia’s Far North and promote protection of the marine environment against pollution, and will also enhance the reliability of transport including that of hydrocarbons from deposits on the Arctic coast and the continental shelf of the Russian Federation.
The comprehensive project to develop the Northern Sea Route (hereinafter referred to as the “Project”) was devised by the Russian Ministry of Transport in conjunction with the relevant federal executive agencies pursuant to Subparagraph 24, Paragraph 1 of the List of Instructions by the President of Russia to ensure the implementation of the Address to the Federal Assembly (No. Pr-2821 of 5 December 2014).
The Project provides for measures to increase navigation, hydrographic and hydro-meteorological support for shipping along the Northern Sea Route, emergency and rescue operations at sea, the development of seaports, the maintenance of defence in the Northern Sea Route area and the development and construction of marine equipment, systems and assets.
The term for implementing the Project is 2015-2030.
