A meeting between the Co-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Russian-Turkmen Commission on Economic Cooperation — Deputy
Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin and Deputy Chairman
of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Nokerguly Atagulyev — was held on the sidelines of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.
“Russian-Turkmen relations are progressing in an atmosphere of partnership and mutual trust. I would like to express my gratitude to the Turkmen side for the attention given to the recent KazanForum and for the participation of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, esteemed Mr Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. I am confident that today’s meeting will provide fresh momentum for the further development of our relations. We will continue working on all the agreements reached, in the interests of our nations,” Marat Khusnullin said.
The Deputy Prime Minister added that trade and economic ties between Russia and Turkmenistan demonstrated high development rates. Trade grew by 21.4 percent between January and March, 2025. The sides were drafting an intergovernmental plan of events for 2025–2027 to boost mutual commerce.
The sides discussed details of cooperation in trade, industry, energy, agriculture, culture, and education, and outlined plans for further development of bilateral relations.
New routes, including one via Turkmenistan to China and other countries, are being considered as part of active efforts to develop international transport corridors. A promising project is to build a Volga-Caspian canal towards the port of Turkmenbashi, as well as a route known as the Eastern Bypass of the Caspian to be incorporated in the North-South International Transport Corridor.
Cooperation in culture is also an important component of the entire system of Russia-Turkmenistan relations. Reviving the tradition of cultural exchanges has proved of importance, with Days of Russian Culture held in Turkmenistan last year.
Deputy Prime Minister of Turkmenistan Nokerguly Atagulyev expressed readiness for a constructive discussion of issues and certainty that the meeting would provide the basis for further development of mutually beneficial relations.
