Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk and Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan – Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Adylbek Kasymaliev met as co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Russian-Kyrgyz Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Humanitarian Cooperation. The event held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, was attended by officials from the relevant ministries and agencies of Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
The commission’s co-chairs discussed topical issues related to bilateral cooperation. They focused on the implementation of joint projects in industry, energy, agriculture, logistics, digitisation, investment cooperation, the further development of cultural and humanitarian ties, and the promotion of the two countries’ integration within the Eurasian Economic Union.
Alexei Overchuk noted the high level of Russian-Kyrgyz cooperation in all areas of interstate relations.
“We see substantial potential for building up our relations in the digital economy, transport and logistics, industrial, agricultural and humanitarian cooperation,” the deputy prime minister stated.
Trade between Russia and Kyrgyzstan exceeded $3.7 billion in 2024, with the share of national currencies in mutual settlements reaching 98 percent. As of 1 January 2025, there were over 1,300 companies with Russian capital, or over a third of the total number of foreign companies in Kyrgyzstan.
“We continue strengthening positive dynamics in trade and investment. According to Kyrgyzstan’s National Statistical Committee, accrued Russian direct investments amounted to $1.2 billion at the end of 2024,” Alexei Overchuk pointed out.
The two countries are working energetically within multilateral international and regional structures, such as the EAEU, the CIS and the SCO. They are also promoting interregional cooperation, with 79 Russian regions maintaining trade and economic ties with Kyrgyzstan.
Humanitarian ties are a key element of bilateral cooperation. Russia and Kyrgyzstan are expanding bilateral relations in science, education and culture.
The Days of Culture of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Russian Federation were a major cultural event in 2024. Their programme included concerts and theatre performances held at the leading venues in Moscow and St Petersburg, the Days of Kyrgyz Cinema, a forum of the two countries’ cultural figures, and an exhibition of the National Historical Museum of Kyrgyzstan. The Days were crowned with a gala concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Region held on the Bolshoi Theatre’s historical stage.
The commission co-chairs talked about the further development of cooperation in education, considering that 16,000 Kyrgyz citizens are studying in Russia. The two countries provide organisational, guidance and financial assistance to the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University. In accordance with the Russian Teacher Abroad project, 198 Russian teachers are working at 42 general schools in Kyrgyzstan.
The two countries are also implementing a project to build nine joint schools in Kyrgyzstan with tuition in the Russian language.
