Alexander Novak’s meeting with Kenyan Presidential Special Envoy for Climate Change, Africa Group of Negotiators Chair Ali Daud Mohamed
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak met with Ali Daud Mohamed, Special Envoy for Climate Change of the President of Kenya, Chair of the Africa Group of Negotiators under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
During the meeting, they discussed their countries’ efforts and international cooperation in implementing the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming and climate change.
The conversation also covered cooperation on the carbon market, the importance of recognising the role of forests in absorbing emissions and the potential for coordinating the efforts of Russia and African countries in adapting to climate change.
Alexander Novak stressed the need for a smooth transition to a zero-emission economy, ensuring equal access to advanced technologies.
“The transition to an economy with low greenhouse gas emissions must be fair, taking into account various national climatic and natural characteristics, as well as development priorities. I believe this transition to zero emissions will be gradual and will involve a wide range of technologies. Both green and traditional energy sources must coexist harmoniously, complementing each other. The transition from fossil fuels is one of several pathways to reduce emissions. The ban on investing in projects related with the use of fossil fuels cannot serve as a foundation for a fair transition,” Alexander Novak noted.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted the important role of switching from coal to natural gas while moving towards carbon neutrality, which has allowed for a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and helped overcome technological gaps.
The meeting participants agreed that any unilateral barriers or artificial restrictions hindering the achievement of climate goals are counterproductive, because global warming is one of the main challenges for future generations.
Russia
emphasised its commitment to addressing climate issues and its intention to continue participating in the international dialogue on combating climate
change, regardless of changing policies in other countries. In total, Russia
has already succeeded in reducing emissions by 70 percent compared to 1990,
which is an absolute record among the countries participating in the international climate agenda.
