Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev held talks with Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia Sakti Wahyu Trenggono on the sidelines of the 7th Global Fishery Forum in St Petersburg. The officials discussed the development of Russia-Indonesia cooperation in the field of agricultural trade, as well as cooperation in veterinary oversight and fisheries.
Dmitry Patrushev noted that Indonesia ranked among Russia’s most important partners in the Asia Pacific region. Both countries expand their collaboration on the basis of friendly and partner relations. Agricultural and food trade volumes are quite impressive. In 2023, they exceeded $1.5 billion, and this year they have already reached $1.2 billion.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, fish and livestock products are promising areas for expanding Russian exports. It is therefore important to facilitate constructive collaboration between oversight agencies of both states.
The Deputy Prime Minister also suggested invigorating cooperation in the field of online veterinary certification. It is necessary to integrate information systems for this purpose. This will considerably expedite transborder freight traffic and reduce document forgery risks.
When speaking about cooperation in fishery, Dmitry Patrushev noted the high development speed of the fishing industry in Indonesia. The country has the largest fishing fleet in the world. The catch of aquatic bioresources boasts record volumes.
“In its turn, Russia is an active member of the global fishing community, so it is important to establish a constructive dialogue in this sphere. The Russian Federation and the Republic of Indonesia consistently and firmly advocate for fighting illegal fishing at the regional and global levels,” Dmitry Patrushev said.
Today, work is underway on a Memorandum of Understanding on Sustainable Fisheries and Cooperation in Aquaculture. The document will provide a legal foundation for the development of bilateral cooperation. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, it is also important to intensify contacts between industry research institutes of the states to achieve new mutually beneficial agreements in the scientific and technical sphere.
Dmitry Patrushev noted that the aquaculture industry was a promising area of cooperation. In Indonesia, this segment accounts for more than half of the consumed fish products. In Russia, aquaculture is also actively developing: production volumes have doubled over 10 years.
