As part of his official visit to the Republic of Abkhazia, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak held a meeting with President of the Republic of Abkhazia Badra Gunba. The talks focused on the principal areas of bilateral collaboration, including socioeconomic development, infrastructure enhancement, and the expansion of humanitarian ties.
“Over the past four years, the programme for the socioeconomic development of the Republic of Abkhazia has been successfully implemented. Trade turnover between our countries has increased by 60 percent. In the first months of 2025 alone, it has grown by approximately 30 percent. The Russian Federation continues to provide meaningful support for the republic’s socioeconomic progress. We see immense potential for the development of agriculture and tourism in the republic. Abkhazia is a reliable and friendly partner for us. We share common ideas and initiatives, and we hold the same view of the world – one that must become multipolar,” emphasised Alexander Novak.
President of the Republic of Abkhazia Badra Gunba noted that, although the challenges facing the republic remain considerable, they are being successfully addressed with the support of the Russian Federation. “It is of vital importance for us to implement all the programmes we have outlined. The results achieved during the period from 2022 to 2025 are clearly positive: trade turnover has grown significantly, and GDP has risen by 187 percent. These are impressive figures. I am convinced that the implementation of the current programme will give a new impetus to the development of our republic’s economy,” stressed the President of Abkhazia.
The visit also featured the 20th meeting of the Russian-Abkhaz intergovernmental commission, during which the parties reviewed the key areas of cooperation and identified further steps to promote the republic’s socioeconomic development.
The delegation visited several strategic sites, including the location of the future Children’s Republican Hospital and the Vladislav Ardzinba Sukhum International Airport. “Despite prevailing challenges, our work remains systematic and our cooperation – firmly focused on practical outcomes. Russia and Abkhazia continue to steadily strengthen their strategic partnership. Today, we are jointly building a shared space of security and resilience, and implementing large-scale development initiatives across critical sectors,” Alexander Novak noted.
During the meeting, a number of key decisions were adopted. They included the continued implementation of the State Programme for the Socioeconomic Development of the Republic of Abkhazia for 2022–2025 and the extension of the core agreement on socioeconomic cooperation through to 2030. This will lay the foundation for a new five-year programme covering the period from 2026 to 2030. The agreement is expected to enter into force before the end of the year.
“I believe that the outcomes of our joint work will provide a solid basis for sustainable progress, will further reinforce our strategic partnership, and will bring tangible benefits to the citizens of both the Russian Federation and the Republic of Abkhazia,” Alexander Novak concluded.
