Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak and First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar discussed collaboration in electric energy, the nuclear power industry and in the oil and gas sector.
Alexander Novak noted that Russia appreciates its partnership and allied relations with Kazakhstan. “Russian-Kazakhstani cooperation is making steady headway. Given its comprehensive and mutually beneficial nature, it meets the spirit of our bilateral strategic partnership and is based on the traditions of friendship, neighbourly relations and mutual respect,” he emphasised.
Russia is Kazakhstan’s biggest foreign trade partner with 23.9 percent of the total in 2021. In the first 10 months of 2022, bilateral trade went up by 9.8 percent over the same period of 2021 to $22.6 billion.
Roman Sklyar confirmed Kazakhstan’s interest in continuing to develop cooperation with Russia in all spheres of energy. He emphasised Kazakhstan’s special interest in cooperation with Russia in upgrading its gas distribution system, developing its gas infrastructure in the northern and eastern areas and transporting more Russian energy resources to third countries. Mr Sklyar noted Kazakhstan’s desire for Russian companies’ participation in building energy facilities in the republic. He said Kazakhstan is working on legislation to improve the terms for involving Russian contractors in joint projects, for instance, the extraction of “tight oil” deposits in Kazakhstan.
The officials also discussed cooperation in the nuclear power industry, including the prospects for the construction of a nuclear power plant based on Russian technology in Kazakhstan.
