The document has been drafted by the Federal Service for Alcohol Market Regulation. In keeping with Russian Government Resolution No.494 of 4 July 2002, On Wines and Spirits Trademarks, the state-run group Soyuzplodimport exercises its vested right to use national alcohol trademarks on behalf of the Russian Federation.
One of the company’s main areas of activity is trading in wines and liquors under internationally known trademarks owned by the Russian Federation.
Foreign companies abusing Russia’s rights to alcohol trademarks registered abroad are currently making the export of Russian wines and liquors problematic.
Acting within its jurisdiction, Soyuzplodimport has lodged lawsuits on several cases of this kind in an effort to restore Russia’s trademark rights when misappropriated by third parties.
The court hearings on those cases are still ongoing outside Russia, and Soyuzplodimport is required to furnish the courts with relevant documents upon request and in a timely manner.
In keeping with Russian Government Resolution No.1192 of 19 November 2012, On Restoring and Protecting Russia’s Trademark Rights for Alcoholic Beverages Abroad, Soyuzplodimport has been entitled to represent the country’s interests on related cases in court and to formalise its trademark rights abroad until 31 December 2013.
The newly signed resolution extends Soyuzplodimport’s rights until 31 December 2014 to restore and protect Russia’s trademark rights for alcoholic beverages abroad and to formalise the country’s trademark rights internationally.
By implementing this new resolution, Russia will be able to ensure the proper use and legal protection of its alcohol trademark rights for alcoholic beverages abroad and to market its wines and spirits internationally.
