Following Government Directive No 1389-r of August 7, 2013, the sea port of Pevek in the Chukotka Autonomous Area was opened to foreign vessels.
The port of Pevek provides seasonal cargo processing and transshipment for towns of the Chukotka Autonomous Area. Over one-quarter of the entire shipments to Chukotka, as well as cargo shipments to the Kupol mine and equipment shipments to the Dvoinoye oil field, are performed through the port.
For the time being, equipment imported for exploration, construction, and mining minerals in the Chaun-Bilibinsk Industrial Zone passes to the port of Pevek through a point of passage across the state border of the Russian Federation in the port of Providence located 1,150 kilometres away from the port of Pevek.
The implementation of the directive will promote the development of transport, logistical, and industrial infrastructure in the Chukotka Autonomous Area, and the reduction of time and expenses related to cargo transfer across the state border of the Russian Federation and its delivery to the region.
