The project will be financed under the Nuclear Power Industry Development state programme.
The funding for the construction of the research installation based on a multifunctional reactor in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk Region, will amount to 64.9 billion roubles. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has signed a resolution to this effect.
The 150 MW installation is expected to become the world’s most powerful nuclear research facility. Its launch is scheduled for 2028. According to the resolution, the developer will be the Research Institute of Nuclear Reactors, a division of Rosatom State Corporation.
The research centre will test new heat and power generation technologies, as well as radioisotope and modified material production methods. It will also thoroughly study the problems of nuclear waste management and closed fuel cycle. The project will be financed under the Nuclear Power Industry Development state programme.
It is also planned to establish an international research centre on the basis of the research facility where scientists from many countries will be able to pool their efforts in researching the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
