The draft Treaty on the Basic Principles of Relations between Russia and Surinam (hereinafter referred to as the Treaty) was prepared by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an element of the international legal basis of Russian-Surinam relations in accordance with the agreements that have been reached.
The Treaty aims to develop long-term mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation between Russia and Surinam in the political, trade, economic, cultural and other areas on the basis of the generally recognised principles and norms of international law.
The Treaty reaffirms the parties’ commitment to developing their ties in keeping with the provisions of the UN Charter based on the principles of the sovereign equality of states, the self-determination of peoples, the resolution of disputes by peaceful means, the nonuse of force or threat of force, noninterference in the internal affairs of states and compliance with other generally recognised norms of international law.
The Treaty also provides for interaction in the fight against organised crime and international terrorism.
The draft Treaty was considered and approved at a Government meeting on 24 September 2015.
