Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk took part in the 109th meeting of the Economic Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States, held at the World Trade Centre in Moscow. The participants considered a broad range of issues pertaining to economic cooperation within the CIS. The Economic Council was headed by First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Hokim Kholiqzoda.
The parties approved an interstate programme, Commonwealth Fair, proposed by President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokayev at the meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State in October 2024. The fair will include annual trade events in various CIS cities, involving craftsmen and farmers from all over the Eurasian region. It is expected to become an effective tool of interstate collaboration, facilitate the creation of a favourable climate for economic and cultural cooperation between CIS states, strengthen business and trade ties, and enhance the international status of the CIS.
Head of the Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography Oleg Skufinsky delivered a report on the implementation of the CIS Interstate Programme of Cooperation in the Field of Geodesy, Cartography, Spatial Data, Geoinformation Technologies, Earth’s Remote Sensing, Cadastral Registration, and Registration of Rights to Real Estate for the period until 2026. The participants were shown the Geoportal of CIS Spatial Data Infrastructure in operation. While the resource has been created and put into operation, its effective use in the interests of various economic sectors requires that it continues to be filled with data from CIS countries.
The Economic Council members were briefed on the activities of the CIS Consultative Council on Consumer Rights Protection in 2018–2024. Its powers are vast and include interaction to ensure the safety of consumer goods and services, protection of citizens’ rights in socially significant markets, taking into account advances in the digital economy, e-commerce, e-finance, and other latest technologies, as well as legal regulation at the national and international levels.
They also considered the draft Digital Transformation Concept for the mining and metals production sector of CIS countries and a plan for its implementation. These documents are expected to address a number of current tasks related to IT support, automation, and digital management of the mining and metals production sector.
The participants approved the draft Interstate Radio Navigation Programme of the CIS Member Countries for 2026–2030, aimed at intensifying CIS navigation interaction on the basis of a broad-scale commercial use of radio navigation systems and their augmentation systems.
A report on the activities of the CIS Coordinating Council for Plant Quarantine in 2019–2025 was presented at the meeting. An analysis of its performance for the period under review shows that it generally fulfils its statutory functions. It has a positive effect on plant quarantine interaction between the CIS member states.
The next meeting of the CIS Economic Council is scheduled for 26 June 2026 in Moscow.
