The Russian-Turkmen Inter-Governmental Commission on Economic Cooperation held its seventh meeting in Ashgabat. Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich and Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov, who are co-chairs of the commission, headed the party delegations.
The meeting participants discussed over 15 issues, such as energy, transport, industry, agriculture and fishery, cooperation in finance and banking, social issues, culture and sports.
The delegates also discussed the partnership between the two countries’ business communities. The parties stressed that there is immense potential for developing bilateral relations.
The commission members also noted that the countries are mutually interested in the import of cars, agricultural and road construction equipment and municipal vehicles from Russia.
The meeting also covered collaboration in agriculture, such as animal farming, plant cultivation, increasing the use of machinery and equipment in agricultural production, and sharing the best practices and modern technology among farming businesses, research institutions and other organisations in the industry. Other issues included education in agriculture, training farming personnel and staging agricultural exhibitions and fairs.
The parties agreed to continue their collaboration in veterinary and phytosanitary control and sharing veterinary knowledge.
The meeting specifically addressed cooperation in education, science, culture and sports.
Mr Dvorkovich and Mr Meredov praised the contribution made by chambers of commerce and industry to improving the bilateral trade and economic relations and strengthening the inter-regional links between Russia and Turkmenistan.
During the meeting, an agreement was signed between the governments of Russia and Turkmenistan on cooperation in marine navigation, as well as an agreement on science and technical cooperation between the Seismology Institute of the Turkmen Academy of Sciences and the Shmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Russian deputy prime minister also held a meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. Mr Dvorkovich noted that the two countries cooperate on a broad range of issues and so far have not experienced any problems. He thanked the Turkmen president for his proposal to provide support in relief measures following the floods in Russia’s Far East.
During his visit, the deputy prime minister also visited the TurkmenTel-2013 telecommunications exhibition and the Ashgabat Ice Palace.
