Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk took part in the 108th meeting of the Economic Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
During the meeting, which took place in Moscow, participants discussed current issues related to the development of trade and economic cooperation among CIS member states and approved a concept for aligning major transport routes running through the CIS territory. The main goal of this initiative is to create a unified, integrated transport system within the Commonwealth, ensuring the rapid and safe movement of goods between states, reducing logistics costs, and enhancing transport connectivity across Eurasia.
Sergei Solozhenkin, Acting Chairman of the CIS Railway Transport Council’s relevant directorate, presented a report on the council’s activities from 2020 through the first half of 2025. Efforts in this regard are focused on developing coordinated proposals for priority areas of railway development, maintaining the technological integrity of the rail network, supporting the development of the “1520 space” rail infrastructure, organising the joint use of freight cars and containers, developing a shared information space, and implementing a coordinated tariff policy for international transportation.
Konstantin Laikam, Chairman of the CIS Interstate Statistical Committee, briefed council members on the outcomes of the Development of CIS Statistics project.
The Economic Council approved a package of measures to develop and promote the use of natural gas as a motor fuel in CIS member states until 2030. The document includes steps to stimulate demand for natural gas motor fuel, improve the regulatory framework, and implement programmes aimed at increasing both demand for and the competitiveness of natural gas vehicles.
The meeting also approved an action plan for the 35th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States. It consists of five sections, including more than 30 initiatives aimed to deepen cooperation among CIS countries and strengthen the CIS’s position on the international stage.
The participants expressed gratitude to the Republic of Tajikistan and the Chairman of the CIS Economic Council, First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Hokim Kholikzoda, for their effective chairmanship of the Commonwealth bodies this year, and wished success to Turkmenistan, which will assume the CIS presidency in 2026.
The next, 109th meeting of the CIS Economic Council will take place on 3 April at the World Trade Centre in Moscow, alongside the CIS International Economic Forum, 35 Years of the CIS: Developing the Greater Eurasian Partnership.
