Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak and Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud co-chaired a plenary meeting of the 9th Joint Russia-Saudi Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic and Science and Technical Cooperation.
“Russian-Saudi political ties are developing actively, and we are able to successfully expand bilateral cooperation and to maintain close collaboration on the international arena. Fine-tuned and trust-based dialogue between the leaders of our countries, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman, facilitates this process,” the Deputy Prime Minister noted.
Alexander Novak noted the rapidly developing bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Russian-Saudi trade volumes have doubled over the past five years; they have also soared by 85 percent since early 2025. In 2024, investment, accumulated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, expanded six times over, and Saudi investment, accumulated by Russia, grew by 11 percent. Over 40 joint projects have been implemented by the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the Sovereign Fund of Saudi Arabia.
Energy cooperation has major significance. Both countries continue to collaborate in accordance with the OPEC+ agreement. The sides are discussing opportunities for expanded bilateral cooperation in multiple fields, including Russian-made power-generating equipment shipments, integrating state-of-the-art AI technologies into the fuel and energy sector, involving Russian companies in energy projects on Saudi territory as engineering partners. The civilian nuclear power sector has an impressive cooperation potential. The same is true concerning industry, healthcare, transportation, information and telecommunications technologies, science and education, tourism, culture and sport.
Indicatively, on the 100th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, Saudi Arabia will act as a guest country of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, scheduled for 3–6 June 2026.
“Joint efforts confirm our mutual interest and firm intention to continue exerting maximum efforts for developing Russian-Saudi ties and searching for ways of streamlining bilateral collaboration,” Alexander Novak noted.
Following the plenary meeting, the sides signed the concluding protocol of the 9th Joint Russia-Saudi Intergovernmental Commission meeting.
