Dmitry Chernyshenko tours Zhejiang University and meets with its leadership and students
During his working visit to Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko toured the facilities of Zhejiang University and met with its leadership and students.
Ren Shaobo, Secretary of the Party Committee at Zhejiang University, provided an overview of the institution, noting that it is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious universities. With more than 9,000 staff members and over 70,000 students, the university places particular emphasis on AI and emerging technologies. Ren Shaobo highlighted the university’s active partnerships with several Russian universities, including Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University, St Petersburg State University, and Moscow Aviation Institute. These collaborations cover a wide range of fields, such as materials science, aerospace engineering, and linguistics.
During the meeting, both sides discussed expanding educational programmes in artificial intelligence. In addition, Mr Chernyshenko spoke with Russian students currently studying at Zhejiang University. One of those, master’s degree student Anna Wang, spoke about her academic experience in detail.
Mr Chernyshenko emphasised that the years 2026–2027 have been declared reciprocal years of education by presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
“I am positive that the initiative will allow us to focus our efforts on core projects for university collaboration. Currently, over 56,000 Chinese students are taking studies in Russian universities across various programmes, while more than 20,000 Russian students study in China. Over the years of efficient cooperation, our nations have completed numerous successful joint projects,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
Deputy Prime Minister highlighted a few examples, including the Far Eastern Federal University’s efforts to expand the Russian language centre network at Chinese secondary schools, as well as this year’s work to select 15 joint research projects in priority areas of Russia-China industrial development, and a joint venture between Lomonosov Moscow State University and Beijing Institute of Technology – Shenzhen MSU–BIT University in Shenzhen.
Dmitry Chernyshenko conveyed proposals from Russian universities aimed at deepening cooperation with Chinese academic and research institutions. Among the initiatives discussed was the proposal to conclude an agreement between Russia’s Synergy Corporation and Zhejiang University. Given its established collaboration with Zhejiang University, Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University has been proposed as the anchor partner on the Russian side. Dmitry Chernyshenko also presented an initiative to pilot international cooperation with Kazan Federal University as part of the Advanced Engineering Schools project. He suggested that these initiatives be added to the agenda of the next meeting of the Sub-Commission on Scientific and Technical Cooperation of the Intergovernmental Russia-China Commission for Preparing Regular Meetings of the Heads of Government, Mikhail Mishustin and Li Qiang.
“The science and technology agenda is among the key global priorities. The leaders of our countries have placed particular emphasis on maintaining technological leadership across all sectors, including the economy. Therefore, it is essential to build close links between our leading institutions of higher education. The effectiveness of this cooperation will depend on how quickly and openly we act. I thank the university’s leadership for your time and open dialogue. I am confident in the success of our joint efforts,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
In conclusion, Deputy Prime Minister announced that a delegation from Russia’s Sberbank will soon visit Zhejiang University.
The Russian side at the meeting was also represented by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Konstantin Mogilevsky and Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Denis Sekirinsky, who co-chairs the Sub-Commission on Scientific and Technical Cooperation of the Intergovernmental Russia-China Commission for Preparing Regular Meetings of the Heads of Government.
In continuation of the visit, the Russian delegation toured Science and Technology Museum and State Key Laboratory of Fluid Power and Mechatronic Systems at Zhejiang University.
