Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk has arrived in the capital of Malaysia as the head of the Russian delegation to participate in events under the auspices of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
In Kuala Lumpur, he will attend the 20th East-Asia Summit (EAS) and hold a number of bilateral meetings.
The East Asia Summit was established in 2005 as a forum for dialogue among the state leaders of the Asian and Pacific region on a wide range of political and economic issues of common interest, as well as for developing regional practical interaction along the vectors approved at the highest level. The summit is held annually during the ASEAN meetings.
The EAS brings together the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – along with ASEAN dialogue partners – Russia (since 2010), Australia, China, India, Japan. the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, and the United States.
Since its establishment, the EAS has worked on six theme-based tracks: energy, finance, emergency response, healthcare, education and regional interconnectivity. Later, this list was supplemented with such topics as maritime cooperation, food security, the economy, sustainable development, poverty eradication and tourism, following an upgrade in the coordination of the EAS action plans for 2018–2023 and 2024–2028.
The summit agenda in Malaysia will focus on discussing current issues of regional development and prospects for building up practical cooperation. Russia supports expanding the range of instruments for applied activities on the EAS platform, with an emphasis on implementing leadership solutions.
