Dmitry Chernyshenko holds working meeting with Cuban Ambassador Enrique Horta González
Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko, Co-chair of the Intergovernmental Russian-Cuban Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation, held a working meeting with Enrique Horta González, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Cuba to the Russian Federation.
This meeting was Ambassador Horta González’s first official event as head of the Cuban diplomatic mission in Russia.
The Cuban side was represented by Carlos Luis Jorge Méndez, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment of the Republic of Cuba, and Carlos Miguel Latuff Carmenate, President of the Gaviota tourism group. The Russian side included representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Foreign Ministry, and the tourism industry.
Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated Enrique Horta González on his appointment and wished him a successful and productive tenure in Moscow.
“We are currently working closely to implement the agreements reached by our presidents, Vladimir Putin and Miguel Díaz-Canel in Moscow on 7 May. Specific steps have been outlined within the framework of the intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific, and technical cooperation. We are striving to come up with solutions that will enable the development of mutually beneficial, long-term opportunities for cooperation,” the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia said.
Enrique Horta González noted that bilateral relations between Russia and Cuba had a long history and held particular significance within the framework of the two countries’ strategic partnership.
“Our political relations are showing excellent results. We maintain dialogue at various levels, and this underscores that we have many points of contact and that our positions coincide on many issues,” the Ambassador said.
Dmitry Chernyshenko also expressed condolences on the passing, on 16 September, of Ricardo Cabrisas, an outstanding Cuban statesman and former co-chair of the Intergovernmental Russian-Cuban Commission:
“We will always remember him as a highly accomplished professional, a man of great determination and diligence, and a wonderful person to work and communicate with,” the Russian Deputy Prime Minister said.
Ambassador Horta González added that the Republic of Cuba would soon appoint a new co-chair to the intergovernmental commission.
The meeting focused on tourism. Dmitry Chernyshenko highlighted opportunities for bilateral cooperation within the framework of the Travel! international forum and the Forum of Tourist Territories.
“Tourism is becoming a major driver of the global economy. In 2024, its contribution to global GDP exceeded $11 trillion, or about 10 percent of the world’s total GDP. The potential for cooperation between Russia and Cuba in this field is enormous. We can present your investment projects to Russian investors at the Travel! international forum to be held next June. You are also participating in the Forum of Tourist Territories in Moscow, and I am confident that new contacts will help us identify areas for mutually beneficial cooperation,” Dmitry Chernyshenko stated.
The Gaviota tourism group is participating in Russian Energy Week and the Forum of Tourist Territories.
Ambassador Horta González described cooperation in the tourism sector as clear evidence of the two countries’ ability to strengthen and expand their trade and economic ties.
“We intend to promote tourism. In fulfilling my duties as head of the diplomatic mission, I am ready to provide every possible assistance to Russian and Cuban institutions and organisations in order to further develop our trade and economic relations, as well as cooperation in other areas,” the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba to the Russian Federation said.
