On the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum, Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk met with Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia Sainbuyan Amarsaikhan, who arrived at the EEF as part of a representative Mongolian delegation.
During the meeting, the parties engaged in a detailed discussion on the
full range of cooperation issues between Russia and Mongolia, both in a
bilateral format and within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union
(EAEU).
The participants praised the dynamics in trade and economic relations. In 2024, trade between Russia and Mongolia increased by 17.8 percent, reaching $2.6 billion. In the first half of 2025, mutual trade continued to grow, rising by 4.2 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk noted that the Interim Trade Agreement between the EAEU and Mongolia, signed on 27 June 2025 in Minsk and currently undergoing ratification procedures in the EAEU member states and Mongolia, will contribute to a further increase in bilateral trade.
Alexei Overchuk also drew the attention of the Mongolian side to the importance of joint work on resolving non-tariff regulation issues, including closer cooperation on technical regulation and strengthening interaction between sanitary, veterinary, and phytosanitary control services.
The talks also focused on the development of the Russia-Mongolia-China economic corridor and efforts to strengthen transport connectivity across Northern Eurasia.
In 2024, Ulaanbaatar Railways transported 33.44 million tonnes of cargo, an increase of 3.3 percent compared with 2023. Growth continued in 2025, exceeding 7 percent in the first seven months. The long-term goal is to reach 50 million tonnes of cargo by 2030.
Special focus was placed on cooperation in education, including prospects for developing the branch of Plekhanov University, which has served as a flagship of humanitarian cooperation between Russia and Mongolia over its 25 years of operation in the country.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that Russian specialised agencies and organisations were working on a project to expand and upgrade the university branch, transforming it into a modern educational complex that meets the highest standards:
“This could become a significant step toward fulfilling the aspirations of your public regarding access for Mongolian children to affordable education in accordance with Russian standards,” Alexei Overchuk said.
