Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev took part in the events of the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress. Following the plenary session at the Congress, Dmitry Patrushev, together with Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko and foreign collegues, planted a tree as part of the Garden of Memory event.
“We regard reforestation as one of our priorities. Over 1.3million hectares of land are to be reforested in Russia in 2025 as part of the Environmental Wellbeing special national project. Volunteers of environmental campaigns also take an active part in this effort. Thus, the Garden of Memory, a traditional environmental and patriotic campaign, is underway across the country and abroad to commemorate the victims of the Great Patriotic War. Such events contribute to ecological education, preservation of the historical memory of our heroes’ deeds of valour and passing it on to the younger generations. Over the five years of the campaign, millions of volunteers from 78 countries joined planting commemorative gardens and have already planted over 130 million trees,” Dmitry Patrushev said.
He had two international meetings on the sidelines of the Nevsky International Ecological Congress – with Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Head of the country’s Department of Environment Shina Ansari, and Mukhtar Babayev, Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Climate Issues. Russia is engaged with both countries within the Tehran Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea.
Russia and Iran have been successfully strengthening ties in environmental conservation, with two operational task forces – on water management and on the environment. The two countries also continue joint efforts on restoring the population of the Persian leopard. In 2016, the first two animals provided by the Iranian side were released into the wild. At present, as many as 12 leopards live in the Russian part of the Caucasus. Dmitry Patrushev invited the Iranian colleagues to visit the Leopard Repopulation Centre in Sochi.
The Caspian Sea decreasing water levels were the key topic discussed at the meeting with Mukhtar Babayev, President of Azerbaijan’s Representative for Climate Issues. Last year, a Russia-Azerbaijan task force was formed on the issue. Russia and Azerbaijan agreed to develop a joint programme to address this problem. Dmitry Patrushev said the programme is to be endorsed as early as this year.
The Deputy Prime Minister also pointed out the need to create a common regulatory and legal framework for the two countries’ cooperation in environmental protection.
