The year 2025 marks the 65th anniversary of resuming Russia-Cuba diplomatic relations.
A Russian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko who co-chairs the Intergovernmental Russian-Cuban Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, paid a working visit to the city of Santiago de Cuba.
As part of the visit, the delegation visited a number of historical landmarks. Dmitry Chernyshenko honoured the memory of national heroes of Cuba at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, the Frank Pais Second Eastern Front Mausoleum, and Moncada Barracks.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the visit is paid at the directive of President Vladimir Putin and noted the symbolism of starting the programme with the city of Santiago de Cuba.
The year 2025 marks the 65th anniversary of resuming Russia-Cuba diplomatic relations, the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and the 510th anniversary of the city of Santiago de Cuba, a hero city and the cradle of the revolution.
“It is a great honour to be here and to pay tribute to the memory of the heroes who laid down their lives for the sovereignty and happiness of future generations,” the Deputy Prime Minister said. “It is crucial to remember this and to raise our children in the spirit of respect and appreciation for everything they have done for us. Russia will support Cuba in its efforts to achieve sovereignty. I wish you economic well-being and prosperity.”
The Santa Ifigenia Cemetery is the largest cemetery in the city of Santiago de Cuba and the entire eastern Cuba and enjoys the status of a national monument. The Deputy Prime Minister and members of the delegation laid flowers at the monument to the leader of Cuba’s revolutionary movement Jose Marti, national heroes Carlos Manuel de Cespedes and Mariana Grajales, and the burial site of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
“Russia and Cuba share a long-standing friendship and common values and principles, namely, to defend national interests and to strengthen sovereignty. The Republic has overcome numerous hardships, and Cubans have always shown resilience and fortitude. I’m grateful to the leadership of Santiago de Cuba for the opportunity to honour the heroes and leaders of the Cuban nation. Rest assured that Russia will stand with you forever,” Dmitry Chernyshenko wrote in the honour guest book.
In addition, during his working visit to the Republic of Cuba, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko held a working meeting with Governor of the Province of Santiago de Cuba Manuel Falcón Hernández.
The delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister will visit the capital of Cuba Havana, where it will take part in the 22nd meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Cuban Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, among other events.
