Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Plenipotentiary Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District, and Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Russian-Namibian Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation Yury Trutnev arrived to Namibia on a working visit. During the working visit, he will meet with the Namibian leadership to discuss Russian-Namibian economic cooperation.
Immediately upon arrival, Yury Trutnev visited the war memorial Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek and laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame, a symbol of memory for the patriots who fell fighting for self-determination, freedom, and independence of united Namibia. The Deputy Prime Minister also laid flowers at the graves of first President of Namibia Sam Nujoma and third President of Namibia Hage Gottfried Geingob.
Yury Trutnev then took journalists’ questions and said he met Namibia’s first President Sam Nujoma more than 20 years ago. “The first President of Namibia was the leader of the liberation movement in Namibia and gave freedom to the people of Namibia,” he noted. “Mr Nujoma remembered well the role the Soviet Union had to play in Namibia’s liberation movement and maintained friendly ties with our country. Since I was unable to travel to Namibia at the time when the first President of Namibia passed away, I took the first opportunity to pay my respects to this great man.”
During the visit, Yury Trutnev will meet with Minister of International Relations and Trade Selma Ashipala-Musavyi.
