Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko had a working meeting with President of the National Assembly of People’s Power and the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba Esteban Lazo Hernández to discuss bilateral cooperation.
“Thank to efforts by President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez the countries have advanced to a new cooperation level. Cuba is popular with Russians, among other things, due to the launch of Mir bank cards there and resumed flights by Rossiya Airlines. There is a growing number of Russian investors set to explore promising niches in the Cuban market. Together, we are overwhelming the sanction barriers while enhancing international stability and the multipolar world,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that Russia is helping Cuba to resolve energy issues.
Dmitry Chernyshenko asked Esteban Lazo Hernández to provide assistance in a speedy launch of Russia’s investment project in Cuba. He also invited Cuba’s leaders and business community to attend the St Petersburg International Economic Forum on 18–21 June 2025, and The Let’s Travel! international tourist forum to be held in Moscow on 10–15 June 2025.
“As part of the efforts by the inter-parliamentary commission, together with State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, we are trying to give an impetus to the relations between our governments. The documents we have drafted will contribute to the success of the 22nd meeting of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation to be held as early as next week,” Esteban Lazo Hernández informed.
According to him, active work within the framework of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission has given a special thrust to bilateral relations. Relevant documents have been prepared and adopted, which were promptly elaborated on by Cuban MPs.
Russia is second in terms of tourist flow to Cuba. The number of Cubans travelling to Russia went up by over 50 percent to 21,500 tourists.
Esteban Lazo Hernandez also noted the high pace of the Russian economy despite the sanctions pressure.
“Russia and Cuba stand together! We will win!” – he concluded.
The 22nd meeting of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation is scheduled for early April in Havana. The Intergovernmental Commission is co-chaired by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Vice President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz.
