Talking to journalists, Alexei Overchuk said that the focus during the leaders’ meeting was on the economic fragmentation taking place today.
“The world is undergoing significant transformations triggered by many factors, which, on the one hand, create uncertainty, and on the other, require everyone to coordinate their actions in addressing the issues on the global agenda. In this context, special attention was paid to the economic fragmentation that is evident to everyone. Great concern was expressed that economies are beginning to protect themselves from each other; protectionist measures are being introduced, which in turn leads to a breakdown in the established global value chains,” the Deputy Prime Minister noted.
The head of the Russian delegation stressed that rejecting the global economy and strengthening protectionism “impacts the efficiency of economies as well as labour productivity and leads to an increase in the gap between the rich and the poor.” According to him, the discussion centred around how the advantages of globalisation can be harnessed to improve people’s quality of life, among other things.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that humanitarian issues, such as the need to maintain an open and transparent dialogue between countries, were also discussed at the leaders meeting.
“It was said that new platforms, such as BRICS, are emerging, where the problems the world is facing today can be addressed through a dialogue of peers,” Alexei Overchuk said.
