Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk took part in the Sustainable Development Goals Summit held in New York under the auspices of the UN General Assembly on 18-19 September. In his capacity as a representative of the state that chairs the EAEU bodies, Alexei Overchuk informed the summit participants about how economic integration within the EAEU contributes to achieving sustainable development goals. He also discussed Russia's efforts in the field of sustainable development on a national level and the obstacles to global economic growth.
The Sustainable Development Goals Summit, also known as the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly, is convened every four years at the level of heads of state and government under the leadership of the President of the UN General Assembly at the beginning of its session.
Context
The institution of the summit was established as a result of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development's decision, The Future We Want, in 2012, based on the UN Commission on Sustainable Development as a “universal, intergovernmental, high-level political forum.” It was also decided at that time that forum meetings would be held every four years under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly (SDGs Summit) and annually under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
