The World Expo is one of the oldest and largest international exhibitions. It has been held every five years since 1851 and lasts up to six months. Expo 2020 is the first world fair to be held in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA).
The Dubai Expo, scheduled for 2020, was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The exhibition opened on 1 October 2021 and will close on 31 March 2022. The overall area of Expo 2020 is 438 hectares. It is expected to have 25 million visitors and 192 participating countries, which is a record number.
The Russia Pavilion theme is “Creative Mind: Driving the Future,” and one of its main ideas is the call for cooperation, interaction and exchange of ideas. One of the largest at the Expo, the Russia Pavilion has a floor space of 3,630 square metres, is 26.6 metres high and has an overall area of over 4,500 square metres. Between 10,000 and 20,000 people visit Russia’s pavilion every day.
Mikhail Mishustin and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai, attended the opening ceremony of Russia’s National Day at Expo 2020 Dubai and toured the national pavilions of the United Arab Emirates and Russia.
Mikhail Mishustin’s remarks at the opening ceremony:
Your Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Friends,
I would like to wholeheartedly welcome all participants and guests of the National Day of the Russian Federation at Expo 2020 Dubai.
First of all, I would like to express gratitude to the leadership of the United Arab Emirates and the Emirate of Dubai for a warm and hospitable reception.
It is symbolic that Russia’s National Day coincided with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Arab Emirates. I bring our sincere greetings and best regards to our Emirate friends on their anniversary.
Our countries maintain friendly and partner relations, which have been growing consistently. Last year, our mutual trade reached a record high of $3.3 billion. During the first 10 months of this year, bilateral trade grew by nearly 75 percent to more than $4 billion. This is a new historic high.
In addition to trade, we are also actively developing our investment cooperation. We are implementing large-scale projects in energy, aircraft manufacturing and other sectors. We are jointly manufacturing the Aurus cars.
There is good potential for promoting our cooperation in nuclear energy and space exploration. We attach great significance to our humanitarian contacts and to the development of our educational and tourism exchanges.
Of course, the Russian Government is also paying special attention to interaction with our Emirate partners in the efforts to counter the coronavirus. The United Arab Emirates were among the first countries to officially register the Russian Sputnik V vaccine and to receive large batches of this medication. Its high effectiveness and safety have been confirmed in many countries.
Russia is sincerely interested in promoting cooperation in science, culture and sports and in strengthening ties among people. Expo 2020 Dubai is an additional opportunity to improve and strengthen our interaction in all these spheres.
The Expo is a venue where the best new inventions and technologies are presented. This is where we exchange scientific knowledge and experience. The exhibition has become an outstanding example of openness and partnership in all areas of human endeavour. It is creating conditions for promoting international cooperation in a broad range of spheres.
We regard our participation in this exhibition as a unique opportunity to demonstrate Russia’s achievements in all these spheres. Our pavilion, which has a total area of around 4,000 square metres, is one of the largest here. It has on display the most interesting Russian projects and also expositions from several Russian regions.
Russia has been the homeland of great creators, inventors, writers, artists and musicians for many centuries. You have mentioned some of them in your statement. Russian creativity continues to inspire the world. Thinking out of the box and inventiveness are the ingrained features of the Russian people.
The theme of our exposition is “Creative Mind: Driving the Future.” The bottom idea is to connect the best minds throughout the world in the interests of well-being and prosperity of the entire humankind.
Russian science has always been in the vanguard of global progress. Our innovators and designers invented radio, the electric bulb and television. The first man in space came from our country, and the list is far from complete.
At the same time, Russia, although it has always tried to be the first, never walked the path alone. We invited the international scientific community to carry out joint research and projects in the most technology-intensive spheres such as space exploration, aircraft manufacturing, green energy and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. We believe that a high-tech future is a common cause where there is no place for borders or bans, national “reservations” or unilateral restrictions.
Challenges are becoming global, and it is only possible to handle them by rallying the efforts of the entire humanity. The pandemic has demonstrated this forcefully. This is why we welcome the call for unity, which is expressed in the concept of the UAE Pavilion. It will be very interesting to see how you have implemented this idea.
We are studying thoroughly and analysing all new solutions used by the organisers of this remarkable and impressive event. This is especially important for us, because Moscow has submitted an application for the right to host Expo 2030.
Russia is known to be a very hospitable country, as the world saw during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
Moscow is a modern and dynamically developing metropolis. It organically combines history and innovation, architectural monuments and skyscrapers, parks and the latest transport infrastructure. The Russian capital can welcome tens of millions of visitors and make their stay interesting, useful and memorable. Most importantly, the world fair it may host will leave a unique legacy for future generations.
We will do everything in our power to get the opportunity to implement the main theme of our bid – Human Progress: Shared Vision for a World of Harmony. We hope that it will win minds throughout the world, and we are sure that Moscow’s bid would be the best choice.
Ladies and gentlemen,
We welcome you to the opening of the National Day of Russia and hope to see you in Moscow at the opening ceremony of Word Expo 2030.
Welcome!
