Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, head of the Russian delegation, had a meeting with the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans on the sidelines of the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference.
The parties discussed approaches by the Russian Federation and the European Union towards overcoming global climate challenges, prospects for expanded cooperation in the climate and energy spheres and other aspects of Russia-EU relations.
Mr Overchuk and Mr Timmermans exchanged opinions on possible cooperation on the Sakhalin carbon-trading experiment and the elaboration of common approaches towards recording and trading carbon units and their mutual recognition.
The Russian party believes that trans-border regulation matters should be addressed in a multilateral format.
The parties agreed to maintain contacts on climate issues and discussed the possibility of continuing their dialogue in early 2022.
