Excerpts from the transcript:
Mikhail Mishustin: Good afternoon, Mr Guterres.
Welcome to the Government House of the Russian Federation.
You have a busy agenda, Mr Guterres. You have already held talks with President of Russia Vladimir Putin.
I would like to note once again that Russia stands for strengthening the UN’s leading role in global affairs. We believe it is essential to fully use the potential and capability of the United Nations to collectively respond to global challenges and threats.
It is important to ensure the supremacy of the international law and guarantee strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter and decisions of the UN Security Council. Russia will continue to support the UN and work towards increasing its prestige in the world.
The coronavirus pandemic has once again reaffirmed the great significance of all UN member countries’ joint coordinated efforts. Russia was the first in the world to create and register a coronavirus vaccine. We offered all our partners at the UN, the G20, BRICS and the SCO to establish constructive cooperation and ensure mass vaccination.
While protecting people’s lives and health, the UN must unite the efforts of the international community to overcome the economic consequences of the pandemic. We believe it necessary to ensure effective operation of the multilateral trade system and take tailored measures to suppress protectionism and abandon the practice of unilateral economic sanctions. It is very important for achieving the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations.
I would also like to single out environmental protection, the fight against hunger and closing the digital inequality gap among the key global tasks the UN addresses. I am ready to discuss them with you alongside other important priority topics of Russia-UN cooperation.
The floor is yours, Mr Guterres.
Antonio Guterres (via interpreter): It is also a great honour for me to come to Russia again, at such a special moment. We marked Victory Day just recently. And we chose this time for our visit to coincide with the celebrations of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. We know that this is the most important date for all Russians.
We know that you have a great responsibility and a difficult task as Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. I would like to pay my respects and say that we are amazed with the way you have been performing your tasks. Thank you for finding the time to meet with us.
Thank you for all the support that Russia provides. I would also like to thank you for the test kits you have supplied and all the efforts in combatting the coronavirus. We appreciate this a lot. This is very important, as well as the production of vaccines. We can see that the Russian Government is doing everything possible to defeat the coronavirus.
