Dmitry Medvedev attends the opening ceremony for the new NLMK-Kaluga steel and bar iron plant in the Kaluga Region.
Ahead of the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister was shown examples of the plant’s products and the model of the new plant. He reviewed the production chain and watched metal processing in action.
The new plant will supply quality metal to the market of central Russia which consumes over one third of rolled steel products. The plant’s steel-smelting division can produce 1.5 million tonnes per year, and its rolled steel division can produce 900,000 tonnes per year (and can be expanded to 1.5 million tonnes). Total investment in the project is over 38 billion roubles.
State-of-the-art technology makes it possible to create an extensive range of high-quality products. The plant’s proximity to the consumer makes its products extremely competitive. There are plans to produce 350,000 tonnes of rolled steel in 2013.
The technological solutions used at NLMK-Kaluga provide for high energy efficiency and low environmental impact. Modern dust and gas collecting systems will absorb over 99% of atmospheric emissions, and the closed water cycle will completely prevent the discharge of industrial waste in water bodies.
During his tour of the plant, Dmitry Medvedev talked to employees and watched how steel is being cut.
Next Dmitry Medvedev viewed the territory of the Vorsino industrial park where the plant is located from a helicopter.

Dmitry Medvedev’s remarks at the opening ceremony:
Good afternoon, friends,
First, congratulations on your recent professional holiday. The opening ceremony of the new NLMK-Kaluga plant is a continuation of sorts of that professional holiday.
I am impressed by what I saw here. This is completely modern, high- tech production, which is especially important for a metallurgic plant; and it is clean production, perhaps the cleanest in this country. I am glad that such new enterprises have been created in recent years. These enterprises create new jobs, too. This plant employs 1,250 people – these are new, high-quality jobs. Hopefully, they will be well-paid. Some 600 people are employed by supporting enterprises. This is very important for the Kaluga Region.
I am aware that the staff includes people from various regions and highly qualified experts – some of them have been educated here, others have come from the Urals and other regions. I hope you will have new good homes here. The social package offered by the enterprise is comprehensive and includes new modern housing.
Again allow me to offer my congratulations on this wonderful occasion. I hope you will find your work here interesting, lucrative and of the highest standards. Good luck to you! Once again, my congratulations on your professional holiday, Day of the Metallurgist!
The Prime Minister signs the plant’s Book of Honoured Guests.
Dmitry Medvedev: Friends, I congratulate you once again. I have written that I wish great success to everyone who works here. I wish you and your families good health, and I hope that the plant will flourish. Good luck!
