Participants discussed the recent inspection of the medical diagnoses of orphans conducted by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, as well as the protection of the rights of people with disabilities.
Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets said that the inspection revealed 983 incorrect diagnoses of children living in boarding schools. Their treatment options should be reviewed, she said.
Ms Golodets also pointed to a decrease in the number of people with disabilities.
“The overall number of people with special needs has decreased from 13.1 million to 12.85 million,” she said. At the same time, the number of children with disabilities has increased, largely because Russia has adopted new live birth standards. The birth of children with an extremely small weight often leads to health problems.
Representatives of non-profit organisations shared their experience in supporting people with disabilities in the regions and advanced practical proposals. One of them delivered a report on autistic children.
Ms Golodets stressed the need for closer cooperation between the social ministries and non-profit organisations. She believes that cooperation between the Ministry of Healthcare and charitable and public organisations can be bolstered considerably.
