Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich has met with International Energy Agency Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven. Held as part of the Gas-Exporting Countries Forum, their meeting focused on global energy security, including progress in the implementation of related G8 initiatives.
A multilateral dialogue on energy security was launched back in 2006, as Russia took over the rotating presidency of the G8.
Mr Dvorkovich said the issue would also be high on the agenda during the Russian presidency of the G20 in 2013 and of the G8 in 2014.
The International Energy Agency is an autonomous international body operating within the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The Agency and the Russian Energy Ministry signed a joint communique at a ministerial session of the IEA Governing Board in October 2011. At that time, the parties agreed that as part of regular bilateral consultations, they should step up their collaborative efforts to maximise the energy sector’s role in reviving and advancing national economies, enhancing global energy security, and reducing environmental damage resulting from energy production and consumption. In addition, an agreement was reached that Russian experts would take part in IEA advisory events as well as in discussions of international regulations for ensuring energy security.
