Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:
Thein Sein (via interpreter): First of all, I would like to thank you, Mr Prime Minister, that in spite of your tight work schedule you found time for a meeting.
Our countries have friendly relations. There are no unresolved issues or disputes between our countries. Your country was one of the first to recognise our independence and establish diplomatic relations in 1948.
When military governments ruled Myanmar, Russia always offered significant aid and support to us.
We are also very grateful to your country for assistance in our development. Everyone is aware of the examples of our cooperation and your assistance, including the technical university in Yangon, a hotel in Yangon, and a hospital in Tanjung. These facilities continue to serve our country today.
We are also very grateful for the training of several thousand highly qualified specialists in your country, this is very valuable for us. These specialists, who were educated in Russia, now serve in the military, and work in the private sector. Significant political changes might take place soon in our country. At this time, I would like to say that our Government, now based on the army, would like to express its gratitude to the Russian Federation for its continuous help and support. Also, Mr Medvedev, I would like to extend our thanks for the support of your country both under the present Government and the previous governments on the international arena. The Russian Federation has always supported Myanmar.
I would also like to assure you, Mr Medvedev, that the feeling that Russia is our friend will always be in our hearts. And further on, we will do everything possible to continue to consolidate the friendly cooperation between our two countries.
Mr Medvedev, I would also like to ask you to send the warmest wishes and regards to President Putin. I would like to add that I will be the president of Myanmar until March so I hope to visit your country in this capacity.
Thank you very much.
Dmitry Medvedev: Dear Mr President, we met a year ago in Myanmar. These were unforgettable impressions for me and my colleagues. Once again, thank you for your hospitality.
Thank you for your kind words regarding our relations, regarding the ties that have existed between the Russian Federation and Myanmar for many years. Rest assured that we are ready to continue to develop these friendly relations with your country with due account for the ongoing political realities and the elections in your country. Based on this, we will continue to build our relations. Our country is always ready to maintain friendly relations with the Union of Myanmar and to further develop cooperation with your state in many areas.
Thank you.
