Dmitry Medvedev has attended the opening ceremony and toured a new Volkswagen engine plant.
From Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s statement at the opening ceremony:
Three years ago, we and our friends and partners at Volkswagen launched a new project in Kaluga, which has come to fruition today. You can see the results. The project involved major investment and is the first time a foreign company is manufacturing engines in Russia.
Our relations with Volkswagen began a long time ago and have not eroded or been damaged by any fleeting considerations. They can be described as mutually beneficial cooperation, which we value very highly.
Modern plants with high-performance jobs and decent salaries have been built rather quickly. This is something we want to achieve throughout Russia. This is our policy, which cannot be swayed by market trends.
Decline and downturn are bound to give way to recovery and growth. The Russian market is huge and has a good outlook for development. So, the national automobile industry has a bright future, especially if companies work as well as Volkswagen Group does.
