Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:
Dmitry Medvedev: Mr President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping, Chinese friends,
To begin with, let me thank you again for your participation in the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Victory. This is undoubtedly very important for us, since our nations made a decisive contribution to the defeat of Nazism and Japan’s militarism.
I am also pleased to note the march of the Chinese formation on Red Square. They produced a strong impression with a very high degree of training.
Of course, your presence here is exceptionally significant for us on this beautiful day. In this regard, I would like to refer to your publication in the Rossiyskaya Gazeta dedicated to the shared memories of the war and the feat of our peoples. I completely share you view that forgetting history means treachery. Our task is to carefully preserve the truth of the events that unfolded in those years. And the presence of the Chinese leadership in Moscow on this day is a token of special relations between our nations, of partnership and strategic cooperation. We truly appreciate it. I am convinced that the celebrations of the victory in World War II in Beijing next September will be equally impressive.
You held talks with President Vladimir Putin and signed a number of exciting documents. We will be working to implement them and continuing the efforts at the Government level.
Let me again express heartfelt greetings to you and to thank you for your participation in the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Xi Jinping (via interpreter): Mr Prime Minister Medvedev, friends, it gives me great pleasure to see you. We are old friends and we have met many times. Two years ago, during my visit to your country, we had a substantial and useful exchange of opinions regarding bilateral relations and other issues. I still remember it well.
We have just witnessed truly triumphant Victory Day celebrations on Red Square. Everything was very ceremonial, very successful, and organised at the highest level possible. This showcased yet again the numerous achievements of the Russian people. Your country has demonstrated to the whole world that it is determined to secure peace alongside with peace-loving forces in other countries.
This has been my fourth visit to Russia in the past two years since I took office as President of the People's Republic of China. It testifies to mutual understanding in China-Russia relations and to increasingly close strategic cooperation between our nations.
President Putin and I had substantial talks yesterday. We agreed that we will continue to support the development of our relations at a high level, regard our ties as a foreign policy priority and enhance mutual support on issues concerning the vital national interests of our countries.
