The 27th World University Summer Games in Kazan is a major international sports event held under the auspices of the International University Sport Federation (FISU).
Kazan won the bid to host the 27th World University Summer Games on May 31, 2008 following the FISU executive committee meeting in Brussels, Belgium, winning over Vigo, Spain and Gwangju, South Korea. Over ten thousand athletes from 175 countries competed for 351 sets of medals in a record number of sports at this year’s Universiade, held on July 6-17.
The programme comprises 27 events, 13 of which are mandatory for each country: basketball, volleyball, judo, track and field, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, diving, water polo, table tennis, football and fencing. Five sports – boxing, belt wrestling, sambo, rugby sevens, synchronised swimming – have been included in the Universiade programme for the first time.
