The existing bridge across the River Samur posted by the border checkpoints Yarag-Kazmalyar (Russia) and Samur (Azerbaijan) across the Russian-Azerbaijani border is a key route for transporting cargo and passengers between the two countries.
According to experts, the bridge is in a critical state of disrepair and cannot service the increasing traffic flow. The bridge was built in 1953 and its height, width and capacity do not meet current demand.
In order to provide reliable motorway traffic between Russia and Azerbaijan, a new bridge must be built across the River Samur.
To that end, the Russian Ministry of Transport and the Azerbaijani Ministry of Transport have prepared a draft agreement.
The draft agreement is developed in accordance with Russian legislation.
The implementation of the draft agreement will:
- create improved conditions for trade and economic relations between the two countries;
- provide and develop reliable and stable year-round motorway service;
- upgrade and increase the capacity of the Yarag-Kazmalyar and Samur checkpoints on the Russian-Azerbaijani border.
