The International Mathematical Union was established in 1919. It is a non-governmental non-profit organisation, which unites mathematicians from all over the world. The International Congress of Mathematicians (hereinafter referred to as the Congress) is held every four years. The Fields Medals are awarded and reports on the best mathematical achievements are presented at the Congress. In 2014, the Congress took place in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
A decision on the host city for the 2022 Congress will be taken at the General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union in 2018, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The bid to host the Congress should be submitted to the International Mathematical Union by 30 November 2016.
A directive was signed to establish an organising committee to develop the bid for holding the 2022 Congress in St Petersburg and to approve its members.
The organising committee includes representatives of federal executive authorities and scientific organisations.
Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich and St Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko were appointed co-chairs of the organising committee.
In Russia, the International Congress of Mathematicians was held in 1966 in Moscow.
