About 16,000 patients infected with the Ebola virus have been registered to date, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). More than 6,000 of them have died. The Ebola fever is an exceptionally dangerous viral infection with a mortality rate of up to 90 percent. No specific treatment or preventive measures for the deadly virus are available.
To ensure Russia’s participation in the international humanitarian anti-Ebola efforts in the Republic of Guinea, the Republic of Liberia and the Republic of Sierra Leone, special funds have been set aside in the federal budget in 2015:
- up to $2 million in a lump sum target contribution to the WHO budget;
- up to $2 million in a lump-sum target contribution to the budget of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF);
- up to $3 million in a lump sum contribution to the World Bank’s emergency fund to assist countries affected by the Ebola virus;
- up to $1 million in a lump sum contribution to the United Nations’ multilateral Ebola response fund.
The decision complies with the clauses of the Concept of Russia’s State Policy in the Area of International Development Assistance (Russian President’s Executive Order No. 259 dated 20 April 2014) on overcoming the aftermath of emergency situations and helping the healthcare systems of the countries fighting the spread of infectious diseases.
