Prepared by the Rosatom State Corporation.
In January 2011, Jordan announced a tender for the construction of the first nuclear power plant (NPS) on its territory on a turn-key basis.
Upon the completion of a tender, Russia’s JSC Atomstroyexport was declared the “preferable bidder” for the construction of Jordan’s first NPS consisting of two power units 1,000 MW each.
The first power unit is to be launched in 2024 and the second in 2026 in accordance with the NPS’s construction schedule.
In January 2014, Rosatom General Director Sergei Kiriyenko held a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman, during which the decision was made to draft an intergovernmental agreement on the project’s implementation.
In accordance with the decision, Rosatom, together with the Russian Foreign Ministry and other federal executive bodies concerned, prepared a draft Russian-Jordanian intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction and maintenance of an NPS in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (hereinafter referred to as the Agreement).
The draft takes account of Russia’s international commitments and complies with Russian legislation.
The
clauses of the Agreement do not contradict the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty
signed on 29 May 2014.
The investments for the project are to be attracted on the Russian and Jordanian markets and the markets of third countries.
The text of the Agreement has been coordinated with the Jordanian side.
The implementation of the Agreement will stimulate the development of Russia’s energy industry and provide the domestic nuclear energy sector with long-term export orders.
