The draft directive was submitted by the Ministry of Education and Science in line with the federal law On the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Reorganisation of State Academies of Sciences and on Amending Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation and also in execution of the Government instruction.
This law states expressly that the maximum number of members of the Russian Academy of Sciences shall be stipulated by a proposal submitted by participants of a general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
After the incorporation of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences into the Russian Academy of Sciences, participants of the 27 March 2014 general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences decided to set the maximum number of Academy members at 2,154, with 948 full-time members and 1,206 associate members.
This maximum number matches the previously stipulated maximum number of members of the reorganised academies of sciences.
