The major aim of the inspection was to assess the possibilities of creating troupe groups under changing conditions, their control on remote territories during military actions, and their ability to implement their specific missions.
The inspection covered all of Russia. Military transport aviation transported personnel, military equipment and materiel.
About 160,000 servicemen, over 5,000 tanks and armoured personnel carriers, over 7,000 vehicles, 130 long-range, military transport aeroplanes, fighters, bombers, and army aviation aircraft and 70 Navy ships were involved in the inspection. About 8,000 doctors and paramedics, including 850 military doctors (officers), took part in the inspection.
Mr Shoigu said that the inspection confirmed the overall combat readiness of the troops, although some problems were uncovered. Communication means at the tactical level are morally outdated and this impeded information transmission and obstructed the implementation of missions. Army specialists proved to have insufficient training. The Army General said that one cause is the insufficient quantity of rounds offered for training.
Mr Shoigu said that it is necessary to take measures to improve engineering support and the level of military engineer training: “Our training ranges that are being modernised will play an important role here. We should fully implement the programme on modernising our training ranges on the surface, in the air and on the sea. They should have the necessary conditions, so that we can conduct all of the training needed for the Armed Forces and the Navy.”
Based on the results of the inspection, the relevant bodies will prepare the respective proposals on adjusting the state defence order and the State Armaments Programme, introducing amendments to the State Defence Plan and the Armed Forces Construction Plan.
