The draft of the federal targeted programme “Economic and Social Development of the Russian Far East and the Baikal Region to 2018” takes into account the decisions made at the meeting of the State Commission on the Socio-Economic Development of the Russian Far East, the Republic of Buryatia, the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Irkutsk Region, which took place on April 2, 2013 in Yakutsk.
The programme includes five main areas of activity: increasing the capacity of the Trans-Siberia and Baikal-Amur railways, and developing motor roads, regional aviation and airport infrastructure, port infrastructure and the electric utility industry.
Over 470 new railway junctions are expected to be built, which will increase the annual cargo traffic turnover of the Trans-Siberia and Baikal-Amur railways to 2,715.5 billion tonnes per kilometre.
The implementation of initiatives included in the federal targeted programme will ensure local residents adequate transportation options within the macroregion. Sixty-two airport complexes and lending fields for regional and local air links will be commissioned after renovation and modernisation. Furthermore, motorways linking Vladivostok to Nakhodka and the Vostochny Port, and Khabarovsk to Vladivostok, as well as entry points to the Chita-Khabarovsk Motorway and other roads from communities in the Amur Region and the Trans-Baikal Territory are expected to be built or renovated, which will ensure that the most important economic sites are interconnected.
Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East Viktor Ishayev said that the draft of the federal targeted programme has been amended. Social projects to construct and renovate healthcare and education facilities, as well as utilities and social infrastructure in the Russian Far East and the Baikal Region, are expected to be included in industry-specific programmes.
