The list of higher education institutions entitled to subsidies to carry out an action plan aimed at improving the global competitiveness of Russia’s leading universities among the world’s leading research and education centres
The Ministry of Education and Science has published a list of higher education institutions that have won subsidies for making it into the global university rankings.
Fifteen Russian higher education institutions were chosen during a competitive selection process to receive special subsidies, which are expected to improve their international rankings. The relevant decision has been taken in the follow-up to the meeting of the Council for Improving Competitiveness of Russia’s Leading Universities among Leading Global Research and Education Centres, which was held on July 5-6, 2013.
The open competition was announced on May 8, 2013 within the framework of Presidential Executive Order No. 599 of May 7, 2012, which was aimed at ensuring that by 2020 at least five Russian universities are among the top 100 global universities.
In accordance with Government Resolution No. 211 of March 16, 2013 On State Support Measures for Improving the Competitiveness of Russia’s Leading Universities among Leading Research and Education Centres, a total of 9 billion roubles will be allocated to the project aimed at making Russian universities increasingly competitive.
Promoting higher education institutions in global rankings includes, among other things, such initiatives as carrying out joint educational programmes with foreign universities, inviting foreign lecturers to work with Russian students, and developing international academic mobility for students and the teaching staff of higher education institutions.
Russian higher education institutions submitted 54 applications to the contest, and 36 were given the green light to compete for subsidies, having met the necessary criteria in terms of the level of development of research activities, the appeal of the curriculum for prospective students, exposure to the international academic market and standing in global university rankings.
Rectors of 36 universities briefed the meeting on the initiatives, which are expected to ensure that their institutions achieve high rankings among the world’s universities. After reviewing programmes to improve international competitiveness submitted by higher education institutions, evaluating their potential to achieve high positions in the rankings of world universities and taking into account the current state of the educational institutions, the Council has chosen 15 higher education institutions, which will be entitled to relevant subsidies starting in 2013.
A news conference is planned to be held at RIA Novosti at 3 pm, July 10, 2013, on the results of the contest on providing state support to the leading Russian universities aimed at improving their competitiveness among the world’s leading research and education centres.
