During his visit to the Ashuluk all-arms testing range in the Astrakhan Region, the Defence Minister examined its infrastructure and training centre, and attended an air defence drill, which involved a practical missile-firing exercise. Later, General Shoigu chaired a routine meeting on building additional facilities and units at the firing range. The meeting participants especially focused on setting up self-sustaining field camps.
Self-sustaining military camps are essential for the army and need to be established at all firing grounds, the Minister said. Once these camps are built wherever possible, personnel training will take three months instead of nine, and the cost of training will be reduced by half.
According to experts, one self-sustaining field camp can house 500 troops. It uses its own water flow well, an independent heating system and diesel power generators, and has a module structure.
There are plans to establish an all-arms training base at Ashuluk, which will accommodate up to 6,000 people and will host training programmes for various arms and services simultaneously.
