The European Convention on the Abolition of Legalisation of Documents Executed by Diplomatic Agents or Consular Officers (hereinafter referred to as the Convention) was signed in London on 7 June 1968. It entered into force on 14 August 1970. As of today, the total number of ratifications or accessions is 22.
The signing of the Convention will eliminate unnecessary procedures related to the consular legalisation of documents. In particular, Russian citizens obtaining documents from the diplomatic and consular missions of the Russian Federation abroad will be able to present them to government offices of countries that have joined the Convention without consular legalisation. In turn, foreign nationals – from member countries of the Convention – will be able to submit to Russian authorities documents issued by the diplomatic and consular authorities of those countries in Russia, without consular legalisation by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This directive is in accordance with the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union of 29 May 2014 and other international treaties of the Russian Federation.
