The meeting participants discussed, among other issues, creating a non-profit organisation called the Directorate for the Development of the St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region Transport System.
According to Minister of Transport Maxim Sokolov, the decision to create the Directorate was made based on the experiences of a similar Directorate of the Moscow Transport Hub. The active work of the Directorate of the Moscow Transport Hub provided for the comprehensive and continuous coordination of efforts to develop the regional transport infrastructure, and helped to develop and to substantiate Government decisions on synchronising budget investments in transport infrastructure and on allocating additional funding. According to the Minister, the Directorate will focus on issues concerning not only infrastructure development, but also road traffic organisation, intelligent transport systems, and organising cooperation between various types of transport in multimodal communication.
Mr Sokolov said that he is confident the creation of the Directorate will make it possible to monitor the implementation of the programme for the Development of the St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region Transport System to 2020, which was adopted in April 2012.
In terms of the council, Mr Sokolov, St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko and Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko signed an agreement on joint work to develop the transport system of the city and the region, which determines the principles and the mechanisms of cooperation between the Ministry of Transport, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region in this sphere.
The St. Petersburg Government and the Leningrad Region Government also signed a cooperation agreement on developing the metro in the city and in the region.
